Life of John

I feel like I messed this up…

Electricity: 256.206 Weekly CO2 output

Water: About 637.6 Gallons a week, roughly estimated.

Gas/Oil/Vehicles: I wasn’t sure how to calculate Gas/Oil because I live in an apartment…. As for the vehicle my mom carpools to work, so I wasn’t sure.

Rail: 11.55 CO2/week

Bus: 16.5 CO2/week

Day 6 + 7

Sorry Mr. Gay, I wasn’t able to get to my computer until now, so here’s Friday’s and Todays.

Comsumption

Food

On friday I had… not too much I guess, compared to days where I go insane. School lunch, and then a cupcake at work. Dinner with friends at Popeyes, and then after Hypnotist-show-gathering at UBurger.

Today, since I woke up at 1500, there wasn’t much to eat. I had 2 donuts for my “breakfast” then went to the mall around 7 and ate my dinner there with my aunt/uncle/mom since we went shopping.

Water

On Friday I took a shower at night, since I woke up early, but not early enough to have time for a shower (I was going to tardy detention). that lasted for about 5 minutes. Carton of Milk, washing water, and soda

Today I brushed my teeth, was too lazy to shower, so I’ll probably do that in a little bit. Half a can of soda, and some soda with my dinner.

Electricity/gas

I…. have spent probably at least 5 hours playing ps3 over the past two days. My laptop has been used semi-frequesntly as well, and I didn’t charge my phone last night, so that was not used for once.

Not to my knowing, my mom set the thermostat for 72…. I just changed it to 62.

Money

I, have spent no money today. Yesterday I spend $4 on popeyes and $6 at UBurger though.

Sustainability

I could go using my phone less, since I do it semi-frequently, forgetting my phone that is, and spend the day without it. It’s difficult to get in contact with people… but that’s just something you have to deal with.

Day 4+5 - Waterless Wednesday+Technology Thursday

I swear, I keep forgetting to do these…. not to mention fail pretty much half of them.

Comsumption
Yesterday, I woke up late, but made it to school on time. I had no breakfast, and ate lunch at school. When I got home I ate again, I think it was chicken. I also had a Nutella and Bannana sandwich…. mhmm….

Today, for food, I again, had no breakfast. Lunch was the turkey dinner they served today at school, the stuffing was a bit mushy… For dinner, I went home and had some homemade pho.

Yesterday I was going great on water, about 2 minutes washing my hands and the carton of milk. Then at work I had a cup of coffee and a few cups of water, whoops. I also took about an 8 minute shower.

Today, I drank relatively the same amount as yesterday, with the addition 8oz of arizona sweet tea, and my shower was about 15 minutes.

Yesterday, I was on my laptop doing homework and then fell asleep with it on by accident, which isn’t good. I also spent time on my Ipod, phone, and Call of Duty.

Today, my laptop was used during school hours to finish work. I also used my ipod and phone, and have yet to use my own ps3, but I went to a friend’s house and played Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 with him. Since I work at State Street, the computers there are pretty much on 24/7.

Today and Yesterday I took the bus to school.

I have spent no money both yesterday and today, although I need to get $5 for my Hypnotist ticket tomorrow, and possibly more for food.

Reduction

I, honestly, have yet to make a conscious effort to reduce my consumption. It’s usually been either I notice it then and stop, or just don’t remember until later.

Sustainability

I have made no changed over the last two days except for drinking a little bit less water. I see myself in no possibly way being able to drink any less than I do now.

Following

I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one feeling guilty that I haven’t been as hard on myself as I should be for doing this.

Day 3 - Try Harder Tuesday

In all honesty, I didn’t try harder to do anything at all yesterday, aside from trying to finish as much of my FHAO paper as possible.

Consumption

Water - 10 minute shower in the morning, ~1 minute of brushing my teeth, toilet flushes, and the like, probably around 6-7 cups of water in various drinks

Food - I didn’t eat much today, didn’t have breakfast besides for a little cookie, my lunch was school lunch, nothing special, when I went home I had chicken wings

Electricy/Gas - I was on my PS3 for about 3 hours, my laptop for 6, my house still remains low-gas usage

Fossil Fuels - I took the MBTA to school and back

Money - Compared to Monday, I spent no money today. :]

Reduction

Even though I was on my laptop for 6 and PS3 for 3, this was a lot less than I usually am. If I could I would be on both for hours at a time without end.

Sustainability

My Water/Gas/Electricity usage continue to be consistent, if not better than I usually am. As I mentioned, my gas/electricity usage is generally much higher than it has been before. Also, with the exception of a Game Release Day, I generally spend on average $5 a day tops, with some days being 0 and some days being 10+

Following

Everyone seems to be taking short, if not shorter shows. Whether this is because of a time limit or their own free will remains to be determined. Ms Wollak also mentioned that Facebook was generally used by us as a break from work, and that it’s been nice to be away from FB, which I agree with, the visit or the arboretum on Sunday with my family without facebook was nice.

Day 2 - Money Monday

Well… this is awkward, I just realized today was money monday.

Comsumption
I used pretty much about the same water as I did on Saturday, maybe a little bit more since I was at the mall.

As for food, my mom make chicken wings and I also ate at the mall.

Electricity and Gas, my house is naturally warm for some odd reason, and thus our gas meter has been set to a steady 61 for the past 2 weeks or so. I opened a window to lessen the heat in my room from a 70+ to a bearable cool breeze. Roughly 2 hours of ipod usage, 1 hour of phone usage, 5 of laptop.

I spent no money on gas, but I took a bus in the morning.

This is where I fall flat on my ass. I spent roughly $160 today overall. $80 on 2 preorders for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, one for myself and one for a friend (who paid me to preorder for him) $53 on a tekken 6 arcade pad bundle, which came with the arcade stick and game, and $10 on food.

Reduction
Well I could definitely spend less money…. haha

I honestly made no effort to reduce anything today.

Sustainability
I could spend less money and save more for later, which I plan on doing, since today was the last day that I said I would spend any more money.

 Following
That hawk saves water usage. Less water = more hair washes. win/win?

But in all seriousness, much like anthony, I’ve been noticing that people have started doing little things to save their consumption.

Day 1 - Social Networking Sunday

Originally, I was intending for this week to be a chronicle of VLogs… but being at home comfy in my undershirt…. I didn’t really feel like putting on a shirt, so here I am.

Consumption

  • Water
Today was one of my better water days. Overall, I would say, aside from the toilets and hand washes, I would say that I spent roughly 15-20 minutes worth of water. My teeth brushing is only about 30 seconds of water usage, since I turn the faucet on for water then turn it off while the brush is in the mouth. Since I woke up late this morning, I didn’t have time to take a shower before my aunt wisked me away to eat and spend the day with my Aunt+Uncle+Cousin from New York visiting.
  • Food
    Food….
the item no one really would want to give up. I honestly did not even realized that we were keeping track of our food consumption until right now. So in the morning, I woke up around 11AMish? and then my aunt came and picked my brother and I up at 12 to go eat lunch. I had Com Suong, which is a Vietnamese dish that is essentially just rice and pork chops. This came with a bowl of soup, and as a drink I had tea. After that, my aunt stopped by Chinatown on the way to my grandma’s house in Randolph for some sponge cakes and egg custards. I partook in 2 egg custards and 1 sponge cake. For dinner, however… we went to a buffet.
  • Electricity
Since I was not home, I’m not sure if there was anything left on, however my ipod, phone, and laptop chargers were still in the sockets when I left… oops. Aside from that, during the day there was relatively minimal phone usage, and roughly 4 hours of ipod use on the way to and from the buffet.
  • Gas/Fossil Fuels
Since I don’t use a car, I did not use any gas, but the car I was in surely did. My aunt/uncle went from their house roughly 5 minutes to my house, then preceded to continue down the street for lunch. Then we went to the Arboretum, where we spent most of our afternoon walking around and taking pictures. Following that, we went to chinatown to pick up the snacks, and waited at my grandparent’s house in Randolph for my other aunt to drive up and then continue on our way to the buffet. We drove from Randolph, to the buffet, then back to Randolph, then continued back to my house.
  • Money
Personally, I spent no money today at all. However, my aunt surely did. Overall, I would say that about $130 was spend today on food only, and another $40 on gas.

Reduction

Today, I scaled back on my electricity usage. Honestly, on any given day, I would be on my phone, laptop, and Playstation 3 playing Call of Duty… all at the same time. Generally, I usually am that good with water, with the exception of some lazy/tired days where the shower feels really good to sleep in. As for money, on any given day that i go out, if I haven’t spent $5 on something then it’s new for me. I usually dish out a couple of dollars for food, maybe some coffee, arizonas, and transportation.

I also limited my use of texting, Facebook, and Tumblr, which if any of you follow (which I don’t believe so aside from Anthony) I am on there pretty much 6 hours at a time, writing back and forth between tabs and such. I also text very often, and today was a surprise because I believe I’ve only sent/received about 10 texts so far.

Sustainability

Any changes that I could make to my daily routine… hmm.. well I guess I could cut back on the amount of food I eat, haha, but generally I don’t eat as much as I did today. It was just because my relatives were in town. As for texting/Facebook/Tumblr, I guess I can reduce the time spent on there, since I have noticed that I’ve been spending less and less time staying on there versus just having the tab open in case someone needs to chat me about something.

How Did You Live Differently Today?

blsenvironmentalscience:

Questions to be answered daily

These are the questions that you should provide a response for during the 7 day challenge.  Please provide the answers on your tumblr page or your video diary.

1.  Consumption - What did you consume today?

Please make a list for your usage of the following substances

Water

Food

Electricity

Gasoline (fossil fuels)

$$Money$$ - What did you spend money on today?

2. Reduction - In what areas of your current lifestyle did you try to scale back the use of specific resources?

List the areas of your daily routine that you made an effort to limit your usage of certain substances.

Ex. Did you reduce your water usage?  Electricity? Food consumption? Technology (iphone, ipod, computers, facespace etc…)

3.  Sustainability - Are there any changes that you made to your daily routine that you could envision making for the long term?  Can you reduce your consumption permanently?  Why or why not? Please be specific, and provide examples.

7 Day Challenge 1st to 3rd

blsenvironmentalscience:

A social experiment, can we give up the unnecessary comforts of a 1st world lifestyle?

Non-negotiable Rules

1.  You are in no way to put your own safety (or safety of others), or general well being in any type of danger because of this experiment.

2.  You should not disrupt any mandatory daily routines (coming to school/work on time).

3.  You should not put yourself at risk academically (you must use whatever technology necessary for homework, computers, interweb etc…)

Lifestyle Changes

You should try and set attainable goals through this activity.  Imagine that you are a high school age student living in a 3rd world country.  What would this individuals average day look like?  What about an average week, or month?  How much different would it be than yours?

Could you eliminate the “comforts” of a 1st world lifestyle??  Could you live this lifestyle for one week???

Assignment

It is your task to chronicle your experience while participating in this activity and elaborate on how easy or difficult the changes were, whether or not you could even make the changes, and if this is something you could commit to for the long term.

You must chronicle your experience in either a blog (like this one) or through a series of video diaries.

Themes

While your efforts should be focused on reducing consumption and living a much “simpler” lifestyle for the entire weeklong period, each day will have a specific theme where you can focus your attention.

For Example:

Sunday -  Social Networking Sunday

Monday - $$$ Money Monday

Tuesday - Try Harder Tuesday

Wednesday - Waterless Wednesday

Thursday - Technology Thursday

Friday - Food Friday

Saturday - Spread the Word Saturday
